Left/right brain action is the talk of the moment so I thought I’d share this excerpt from The Psychic way followed by the quiz from Past Life Tourism.
At the bottom I am re-sharing the optical illusion of the spinning lady at the bottom. I first shared her in 2007 which is frankly, bonkers! That is times of yore (Friends).
Excerpt from The Psychic Way ~ Fine-tuning Your Intuition
Your psychic abilities and intuition are freed up and can develop more fully when you are able to use the right-hand side of your brain and not be stuck in the analysis of the left. Your left-brain hemisphere works with reason; you look at something and deduce what it is you are seeing with logic. Your right-brain hemisphere is responsible for your creativity and imagination. We can think of them as separate entities or complete in their own right. The left-hand side is usually referred to as the male, while the right is the feminine or the conscious and subconscious mind. If there is something we don’t quite understand our mind can become very inventive and this is often the way phobias get strong because we over-imagine.
I tend to think of the brain and mind working harmoniously with the focus I require in any given moment in the exact place I need it. A good metaphor for the mind is to think of a theatre; the audience sees the finished production but is not privy to the hard work going on behind the scenes. The conscious mind is the bit on show and everything else that happens beneath the surface is hidden, backstage. There are some experts who insist that the conscious and subconscious do not exist and we are just ‘mind’, but for our purposes I think it is best to think of them as separate but working together. If you were to squeeze a tube of toothpaste would you grab and scrunch (right-brain) or would you methodically start at the bottom and push out the exact amount (left)? What about if you are eating bread and a spread? Would you put the used butter knife into the jam and blob on any old amount (right) or use a clean one to deliver the exact portion (left)? Do you analyse most things that you experience, deliberating with yourself and spending time logically working through a particular course of action, or do you just trust your instincts so that if it feels right you let it happen?
When we are in ‘left-brain mode’ we think and behave logically, sequentially and methodically. We plan and analyze – sometimes to destruction. From this behavior we get the term ‘analysis paralysis’. It can be so disabling that the person who constantly functions like this might end up unable to do anything or runs the risk of developing an obsessive-compulsive disorder. I have seen this happen a lot in my work with performers and sportspeople. Take golfers for instance; they replay their game in their mind over and over, often to the point of destruction, convincing themselves how useless they are and then when they next play they start at the point of being a failure and their game tends to become stressful. They make silly mistakes, which in turn reconfirms the earlier thoughts. Likewise, performers can over-criticize and lose their self-belief very easily. If they mess up an audition through performance anxiety or get turned down for a role that they were sure belonged to them, they can easily slip into a downward negative spiral.
When we are in ‘right-brain mode’ we think and behave intuitively with feeling and imagination, going with our hearts but maybe not paying quite enough attention to the goal or logic. You may know people who seem to be away with the fairies most of the time, living in a fluffy world and too much of this type of thinking might mean losing touch with reality. It is generally said that men are left-brain dominant and women right-brained. Or, pedantic male versus intuitive female. It might be, for example, that you logically know or understand something but your imagination creates another reality.
The Quiz (from Past Life Tourism)
You know that the left-hand side of the brain works in a literal and sequential way, while the right-hand side is your creativity and imagination. Balance is perfect for day to day living with the ability to trigger action from either at any time.
Here is a little quiz for you to determine which is your preferred brain side.
1. Change BULL to GATE changing one letter at a time in as few goes as possible.
2. Work out the seventeen times tables - backwards. Do this for two minutes.
3. Imagine being a flower. Notice everything about yourself. Where are you? Are you in bud or blossoming? How are your roots? Check out your color, size, and strength. Really try and get into being the flower. Is the earth dry or wet, warm or cold?
4. Imagine in your mind's eye that you are a bird. What bird are you? Are you small or large? What color are you? Do you fly, walk or hop? What do you eat? What noise do you make? Are you male or female?
5. Being your imagined bird, fly over the top of your house and see how it looks from above, all around the outside and then go inside and explore the whole building, going from room to room.
How was that? Numbers 1 and 2 predominantly use the left hand side. Numbers 3 and 4 predominantly use the right. Number 5 uses both as you have to be creative and at the same time think logically to move around your house.
Which numbers did you find the easiest or the most preferable?
Have you ever heard the saying, 'Not in his/her right brain'?
Some people call the left side the thinker and the right the emotional - that's a pretty fair description.
When you are regressing and progressing you will mostly be in right-brain mode. But, your left-brain will join in and quite likely analyze, comment, disagree or agree knowingly as you go.
It might be that the left side is mostly the conscious mind and the right, the subconscious.
This is often surprising to many people who expect to be 'out of it' when in hypnosis or a meditative state. I cannot tell you how many times I have been told, 'I heard everything you said. I remained conscious throughout.' Well, that's a relief then.
The other frequent comment is, 'I didn't seem to go under'. I always ask them, 'Under what?'
The common misconception is that when we go into the hypnotic meditative state, we slip under the level of consciousness. However, we don't even do that when we're deeply asleep. We might when we're dead until we come back for another go.
If your quiz results show that you are more left-brain dominant, by using your imagination and getting in touch with your feelings and emotions, you will be able to enhance the abilities of your right.
Too much right brain activity might make you seem fluffy or with your head in the clouds. Some serious right-brainers seem to bypass reality totally (maybe that's not such a bad thing?!). Logical thinking or doing things like working through a puzzle book or Sudoku will boost your left side. Some lefties seem narrow minded, as it might come across as though they are lacking in imagination and devoid of any emotion. If you are completely balanced please come and work for me.
